When you get a piercing, it is nothing more than a foreign object through your skin. Many times, your body will treat the jewelry like a splinter and try to push it out. Surface piercings are very prone to this migration. Surface piercings are different than many and most piercings. The way a surface piercing works is that a barbell, shaped like a staple with two 90 degree angles, one on either end, is pushed through one hole in the skin and exits another. The shape of the barbell makes it easier for the body to push the jewelry out, which makes healing even more difficult. Only skilled piercers should practice this type of piercing, as the rejection rates are so high. A lot of skin tissue can be damaged with this piercing. The more experienced the piercing, the less chances you have to rejection. As surface piercings are so sensitive, once healed, if you bump it several years down the road, you can invite the migration and rejection process. You do not want to even start this process, as it is very hard to stop, and if you do not remove the jewelry before it is too late, you will be left with very ugly scars.

Facial piercings have been very popular throughout the years. To include both primitive and modern cultures. Tribes once used body modifications as a rite of passage. They preformed various brandings, scarrings, and piercings. Tribes pierced the lips of women before marrage, adn stretched the piercing to mark the times. They piercings the cheeks of tribemembers, and wore bars connecting the piercings. Nose piercings began 4,000 years ago in Middle East as they were thought to make childbirth easier due to the placement of the female reproductive organs.Today, we still see these piercings amongst our culture, as well as many other facial piercings. For the most part our facial piercings do not have anything to do with Genesis (as Rebekah was given the gift of a nose ring) or even high standings in our society. For the most part, out facial piercings as well as other body piercings are just for aesthetic purposes.

A big trend today in America would include tattoos and piercings. Young and old are doing it. Body modifications have become a popular industry. Body modifications started as tribal art in Africa, South America, Asia, and Australia with lip plates, ear plates, and cheek rods. They had different meanings and significances. Tribe status and rite of passage ceremonies are two reasons for primitive modifications. Warriors, puberty, marriage, etc. all are considered rites of passage.Body modifications today have changed greatly since the more primitive times, but the procedure has not. The only thing is we are more sanitary today, than the earlier tribes.You should remember the safest place to get a body modification is at a tattoo shop if it involved piercings, tattoos, brandings, scarification, etc. Or at a doctor's if it involves implants and surgeries.

One of the most popular piercings in today's youth-teen and young adult- is the navel piercing, also known as the belly button piercing.The most common navel piercing is through the upper ridge of the navel. Sometimes the navel piercing is through the lower ridge or the left and right ridges of the navel. In many cases it depends on the navel in question as to how the piercer will pierce the piercee. Some belly buttons are shaped differently, where they will not hold a standard navel piercings properly, so a bottom piercing must be done. And, in some cases, people like the look of having both, if not all four sides of their navel pierced. It's fun and interesting to have something different and unique, but before you do so, make sure you know how to take care of the piercing.
