The ringworm fungi live in hair follicles and cause the hair shafts to break off at the skin line. This results in round patches of hair loss. Your vet may look for the fluorescence of infected hairs under a special light, but this will only diagnose 2 of the 4 species of ringworm fungi. A culture of the hair for the dog ringworm fungus is the most accurate, but it may take up to 2-3 weeks for the culture to become positive.
