Parody is one of the sincerest forms of flattery and one of the funniest forms of comedy. Sesame Street took it to an 'art' form on several levels with Monsterpiece Theater. Designed as a play on the PBS classic Masterpiece Theater, it was hosted by Alistair Cookie, his poor grammar and jiggling eyes belying the purported serious elegance. The sketches played off classic works of literature as well as more modern television and movie favorites. And, as always with Sesame Street, there was danger of learning something about numbers, spatial relations and social concepts all while laughing your head off. (Which can make it difficult to store your new knowledge!)

Kermit valiantly interviewed a parade of characters from history, fairy tales and nursery rhymes. From his first appearance (in a tacky plaid coat) in the late 60s, Kermit was never prepared when the camera started rolling and his stories inevitably went awry.

In the story of Inkheart, there is a story within a story: Mo originally brought four of Inkheart's characters to life while reading aloud from a novel which is also called Inkheart - Basta, Capricorn, Dustfinger, and Dustfinger's pet marten, Gwin. Dustfinger, a fire eater, desperately wants to return to the world of the fictional novel; Capricorn, the villain of both the 'real' and 'imaginary' stories, wants Mo (and later, Meggie, who shares her father's unusual gift) to summon an evil monster forged from the ashes of the murdered known as the Shadow, from the fictional novel; and Basta is Capricorn's right-hand man who loves his knife.
